It is identified by the symbol <strong>S<\/strong> and atomic number <strong>16<\/strong> in the periodic table. Sulfur is a nonmetal and is typically observed as a bright yellow solid. It has been known to humans since ancient times and was used in early civilisations for medicinal purposes, fire\u2011starting, and disinfection.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In nature, sulfur occurs in both <strong>free (elemental)<\/strong> and <strong>combined<\/strong> forms. Its natural sources include volcanic regions, underground deposits, and mineral compounds such as <strong>sulfides<\/strong> and <strong>sulfates<\/strong> found in metallic ores.
